CEDAR: Community Engagement in Deafness and Autism Research Conference

SCTL is thrilled to co-sponsor the upcoming Community Engagement in Deafness and Autism Research (CEDAR) Conference! Our hope is to address and better understand some of the fundamental issues that can create barriers to community-engaged research in the ASD and deaf communities. We invite all stakeholders (Deaf and autistic people, their families, clinicians, policy-makers, teachers, scientists, and community members) to participate in our conversation. We welcome everyone's participation and hope you may join us!

Town Hall on Transitions for Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum

It will focus on the transition of young adults on the autism spectrum from adolescence into adulthood. South Huntington Special Education Information Fair

The Social Competence and Treatment Lab was very excited to attend this recent event held at Walt Whitman High School. The Special Needs Fair bought together local organizations, providers, and families in need of services. SCTL held an informational table and met many new families and friends in the community!

Autism Awareness Obstacle Course Color Challenge 2018

The Port Jefferson Elementary School PTSA is hosting an exciting fundraising event to promote Autism Awareness and provide a fun and inclusive activity for children and their parents. This event will include an obstacle course and colored powder, so come wearing a white shirt! Sunglasses and a white bandana will be provided to the first 100 participants. The Autism & High Functioning Asperger's Association will be hosting its Spring 2018 Conference this year addressing major topics relevant to Adults and Adolescents on the Autism Spectrum. Dr. Lerner will be presenting a conference Break out Session, "Let's Get to Work: Policy and Strategies to Support Employment", where he will be sharing some of the most recent findings from our large-scale employment survey and also sharing relevant strategies and tips to aid adults on the Autism Spectrum in succeeding in the workforce. Conference topics range from employment, relationships and access to services, all within the context of issues relevant to adults on the Autism Spectrum. Notable keynote speakers include Dr. Barry Prizant, sharing on "Autism: A Uniquely Human Experience" and Dr. Nick Dubin, presenting "Caught in the Web of the Criminal Justice System". In celebration of Earth Day, on-campus organizations and related faculty here at Stony Brook create an engaging, week-long program which promotes environmental awareness and appreciation all across campus through various student performances and events. The Social Competence and Treatment Lab is glad to go for a second year in efforts to engage with other organizations on campus and with on campus students in the efforts to recruit passionate students to contribute to the work in our lab! We hope to see you there!
Members of the SCTL are excited to attend a Networking and Panel Discussion highlighting opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds to participate in research relating to psychology and neuroscience. As Stony Brook being one of the most diverse schools in the country, it is imperative that we encourage engagement in neuroscience research from faculty and students to foster creativity, innovation and valuable perspectives in these fields. The SCTL is thrilled to be attending the FIRST EVER General Membership Meeting of the Port Jefferson SEPTA to be held at the Port Jefferson Highschool Library. Dr. Lerner will be sharing about the work we're carrying out here at the SCTL and are excited to support Port Jefferson's new SEPTA chapter ! As usual, expect members of the SCTL team to be present to share about new opportunities to participate in our studies!

- The Concert Section will be geared towards those who would like to listen rather than participate in making music. Participants enjoy selections of classical music and Disney songs performed by musicians of the Stony Brook University.
- The Interactive Musical Section will be geared towards those who would like participate in making music with instruments. The instrument petting zoo team will join participants to make music together.

Spring Music & ASD Event!
Sunday, February 18th 2018 1-3 PM We are already planning our bi-annual Music & ASD event to be held right here on the Stony Brook University Campus! We are so excited to host this fun event for our lovely families in the community. As always, the event will feature interactive games for children as well as opportunities to quietly listen to live music performed by students at the Staller Center for the Arts, or the chance to learn about instruments and play them!
